The RRVT is a 24" gauge private railway located in northern Illinois. It was started in 1951 by a group of traction fans and railway employees, and has continued to evolve through the years. This line has about 3500' feet of track all under catenary that is energized at 250VAC. There are various pieces of equipment on the line, from streetcars to speeders and numerous freight cars for performing line maintenance. The only goal is to have fun and keep the equipment running while expanding the capabilities of the operation and striving for continuous improvement of the physical plant. We hope this channel will inspire someone to build their own setup and pass the fun of miniature railways on to the next generation. Sit back and enjoy!
Attempting to move loaded hoppers up the 4% grade with the steeple cab. Can we do it? Lets find out!
Something fun for this video. I was recently gifted several truckloads of cement blocks to use as rip rap in our flood prone areas, so before dispersing them I thought it would be a good time to really test out the power of the steeple cab locomotive. I have not tried to move this much weight up the ruling grade before, I generally don't fill both hoppers at the same time. Lets just say that we ran out of adhesion long before we ran out of power, the estimated loaded weight of both cars is around 4 tons and the maximum power consumption was about 13kW. The line voltage drooped more than expected, which I later found to be caused by a failed contactor in one of the substations. Did not kno...

Air brake systems used on the RRVT equipment
Просмотров 2,3 тыс.Месяц назад
In this video I cover the air brake controls used on all of the powered equipment operating on the RRVT. There is nothing fancy about any of the braking systems, they are all just standard industrial air cylinders operated by proportional pressure valves and off the shelf compressor equipment. Cheap yet functional is how we roll (and stop)...

This is first of a multi part series showing some of the electrical control system architecture used on the various pieces of equipment on the RRVT railway. In this video, I cover the electric motor drive system in the Open Car and the Steeple Cab locomotive. I have gotten a few requests for more detail on what makes things move out here, so lets get started! Stay tuned for more parts to this s...
First ride on the RRVT railway in 2024
Просмотров 38 тыс.3 месяца назад
This past weekend I went out the railway for the first time this year, mostly to just check on things and see how much damage there was from the winter storms. Very few branches had come down and no serious track issues were noted, I managed to take a full ride around the line in the steeple cab and only de-wired twice which is good for a 1st run of the year. Apologies in advance for the wind n...
An updated video of the map of the RRVT route
Просмотров 4,3 тыс.3 месяца назад
One of the most frequent video requests I have been getting is to make an updated map of the system and show where some of the changes have been made since the original map video from 2011ish. The wait is over, grab a coffee and have a look! Apologies in advance for rambling, this was originally going to be like a 5 minute video but I have no idea what happened and it ended up being almost 18 m...
The Boxmotor is alive!
Просмотров 303 тыс.4 месяца назад
Over the summer I managed to get the boxmotor out of the barn for the first time in over 10 years, it was quite a chore to move it as the ties had rotted out under its track so the car was derailed due to a wide gauge. Once getting the track back in gauge it was able to be taken out and we went for a short ride, only to discover what I had feared would happen- the car will not clear one of the ...
A bit of track work on Christmas eve
Просмотров 3,3 тыс.6 месяцев назад
Normally this time of year its snowy and the ground has long since frozen, but this year has been anything but normal. Its been raining for a couple of days, the temperature has barely been below freezing as of yet and there has been no snow at all. I took advantage of being off work for the holiday and the warm weather to head out out for a bit and get started on what was going to be my 1st pr...
We now have radio remote control capability on the RRVT!
Просмотров 4 тыс.6 месяцев назад
Over the summer I designed and constructed a radio remote control system that can be used to operate the steeple cab locomotive via a handheld transmitter. This was built primarily to allow me to ride behind the locomotive and watch the trolley shoe in real time to make adjustments to the catenary on the fly, instead of waiting for a de-wire event to occur. Think proactive maintenance instead o...
Modification of the dump car to add powered doors
Просмотров 3,9 тыс.6 месяцев назад
When I built this dump car in 2021 it was designed with hand cranks to open the 2 dump doors on the bottom of the car. After a full year of use I realized that opening these doors after filling the car is just more work than what I want to be doing so I set out on finding some motors to do that work for me. Initially I had some right angle gearboxes sourced and was in the process of looking aro...
Details of and general information on the catenary used on the RRVT line
Просмотров 67 тыс.6 месяцев назад
Before we begin, an important disclaimer about hobby electric railways: This method of powering your railway can be dangerous and you must be aware of the fact that you can be seriously injured or even killed instantly if you contact an energized catenary wire while another part of your body is grounded!! Electricity must always be fully respected as it does not discriminate- like any other ele...
Moving some poles from the west end of the line to the material yard and showing the new pole rack.
Просмотров 2,8 тыс.Год назад
At the end of the season I built a rack in the material yard for storing the catenary poles, this rack keeps the poles up off the ground until they are needed and now it is very easy to transfer them onto the car for transport. Also showing the recently reconstructed trackage in the material yard, which still has some finishing up to do but at least there is a place to store some cars again! Th...

Grab some popcorn and relax as I show the steps taken over a period of several months when I constructed a new 60ft long deck bridge. The construction of this bridge completes the mainline reroute project that was started last year and has now been operational since about August of 2022. All is working well and I am very pleased with the result! 2023 will bring a lot of maintenance work that wa...
A quick update on construction of the re-routed mainline at the RRVT

With spring now upon us its time to start making progress again at the RRVT! In this video I give you a quick update on what is going to keep me busy for the foreseeable future out here, hoping to be running actual trains across this newly laid track very soon. Once the main route portion is completed, the focus will shift toward the line the goes down the hill and back to the carbarn. Let me k...
Extreme flooding on the RRVT in the summer of 2017
Просмотров 14 тыс.2 года назад
I was going through some video footage from the last few years, I found this little gem from 2017. At the end of July in that year we had multiple storms come through which dumped a lot of rain over the course of a few days. The ground became saturated and the creek rose far out of its banks, flooding most of the lower line. Had the creek come up about another foot, water would have been in the...

How do you power the line?..... /track, generator maybe?........
Awesome!
WHAT'S SOME GOOD TRAIN MOVIES?
Wonderful friendly crossings video. 😊
Which country
Illinois, USA
It's doing good . nice video
Thanks!
If ever you need a bit more traction I suppose you could just stop, get out, and move some of the load up into the cab. :)
I did consider putting some cinder blocks on the frame of the locomotive if it wouldn't go up the hill!
Cool!!!
Nice to see just how powerful the steeple cab is. Maybe a sander is in order to help out? Thank you for sharing.
If I did this kind of operation regularly, a sander would be in order for sure!
It was cool to get a POV of operating the steeple cab. Thank you!
Very smooth trackage! Great fun!
Awesome cars nick!
Thanks Devon!
Heart in mouth stuff! Excellent fun. 😊
Might need to make a 2nd steeple cab and double up 😂
Haha dont give me any ideas!
Nice robust run. By the way, have you gotten the tree down that was blocking a curve for the Boxmotor?
Not yet, its on the list but havent gotten to it yet. The problem is that the tree is being used a pole, and when I cut it down there will be no way for me to set a pole there without removing the stump. So I'm going to have to set a pole on the stump and use guy wires for it, or set the pole way far back. Not such a simple project, but it has to be done eventually.
1:45 8kW? A lot of power.
Its doing a lot of work too !!!! Still you need some decent wiring all around the track, 40 amps is not a joke !!!
It would have been easier without me & guests that you invite. Less weight. Thanks for thr joy ride 😊😊
Boy, I can tell somebody's been really hard at work to get that track to look that good!!!!
Thanks a lot!
Thanks again. Always a great first person .
Appreciate you watching!
I always enjoy watching you do railroading
What an awesome little machine!
I hope one day I can could buy a good piece of land and make my own tracks and train 🚂 ❤this was always my dream as a kid
Do it!
Why yes!, even small scale traction can duplicate what the full size ones were capable of! Great video❗
time to install a sander :)
Beat me to it…😅
Ive considered it, if this was a common move I'd already have it installed!
Reminds me of the Australian W2 I used to work on in Dallas, the motors were very worn-out so she had a tendency to "Chug" like a steam engine when going up hill from across the highway to Downtown. Amazing video as always!
Cool!
Nice one !!!!!, quite pull power. I know probably no sense, but just imagine puting some sanders !!!!. I know you dont do this hauls usually. Love hove the amp meter lets you know about the slipage. Got me thinking if this could be feed back as a creep control or antislip. Just talking alone here ... LOL. Nice vis as usual Really enjoy them.
I considered adding WS control when the locomotive was designed, so the circuitry is already fairly easy to modify if I decide I ever want or need to do that. If I made regular heavy moves like this, I would add sanding for sure. 99% of the time there is no need though, so I just rely on the feel of the wheels and watch the ammeter to know how to get the best control, much like they used to do in the old days!
I was holding my breath, especially on that first turn. I was worried the inertia might create a problem. Hauling a load like that must put strain on the bed.
Its good for tamping the ballast for sure!
Makes me nervous when you focus on the meters like that. You should really be paying attention to your steering.
🤣
I have lane keep assist installed on there so no need for me to hold the wheel lololololol
@@CNW4145 🤣🤣🤣
Fun experiment!
The rail train are so neat I joy that one
This was fun to watch. What a special place. I just kept thinking about the amount of upkeep. The constant march of rust and rot. The leaves on the ties making the wood soft I would not be able to enjoy it because I would be working on it non stop.
Thanks for stopping by, the work to maintain it is what is fun for me. Gives me a job that you can really see immediate results when its done!
Narrow gauge railways in the UK often use plastic recycled sleepers especially for replacement in situ. Lasts forever, and termite proof I assume as we don't have such pests.
We have plenty of pesky termites, but they dont bother the treated ties until the treatment is gone. I've looked at using plastic ties several times, but they are so expensive. You would think that someone would be happy to get rid of melted milk jugs and bottles but they charge nearly $20 per tie. I get my wood from lumberyards that have rejected stock, like its too warped or has breaks in it so its much cheaper to buy. I can get a wood tie for about $2-$3 and they last at least 25 years so the cost of plastic just doesnt make sense unfortunately.
WOW. Incredible. Need to explore your videos ❤
Thanks a lot!
Really cool video. I would put a small train depot on the route. If I had something like this. Maybe a small switch tower also. Nice video.
There is a very small depot near the carbarn. Maybe someday I'll add a switch tower, that would be neat!
16:20 👍
Show the damn train d.a.
-worried about the leaves..but it turned out ok!!!
Those leaves dont bother too much, only if they are on the big hill lol
As for the issue with the coons, i just mix some Habanero peppers in some cheap ground beef, and set it out for them to enjoy.............they cant seem to find water fast enough❗
The small version of interurbans that used to be everywhere at some point in time! VERY NICE❗
That is exactly the idea of this railway, to replicate in miniature what once existed :)
@@CNW4145 the town i live in had an interurban line through it years ago, it converted to diesel in the 1950s, and when the interstate highway program got underway, about a half-mile of the traction line was lost to history. Within the last few years, a 4.5 mile portion of the right of way north of the gap, was converted to a bike/hike trail. Ive been on it a couple times, and the first mile is a breeze going downhill, but coming back up, its a whole different ball game. I dont know what the grade measures out to be, but i can just imagine those ancient freight motors had a real struggle on their wheels! There are a couple more segments of the same interurban in the area, and theyre also bike/hike trails, but one section stands out from all the others, its about a mile long, built in the 1940s as a bypass route to avoid downtown Springfield Illinois, and is still in use as of today, doing exactly what it was intended for when first built in the 1940s.
Its a shame we don't have them anymore, we really did have a very advanced transportation system at one time. Just think of what it could be today! Oh wait, thats what Europe did lol
@@CNW4145 this is kind of scary, ive read that it costs more to charge an EV, than it does to fill up a gas-powered car. But, across the pond, it seems like its the other way around. And then, theres hybrid vehicles built by some companies, after i did a lot of thinking, it dawned on me, they shrunk the innards of a diesel-electric locomotive into a small vehicle size, the powerplant keeps the batteries charged, while going down the road.
I have been watching all the videos of the RRVT and totally enthralled. I've never seen anything like it, certainly nothing like it over the pond here in the UK. So rustic but functional. However, a silly question, what is it used for. Does it have a commercial function or is it just for pleasure? Can't wait for the next video!
Its only for fun, and I have a lot of it lol
El sueño de todos los amantes de las vías férreas!!
Gracias!
AWESOME!!!! Can I have a ride? Where is this? LOVE IT !!!! I would Truly Enjoy seeing this in person. I have an original Locomotive blueprint on Linnen I will trade you for a ride.
cool
You should try re building the abandoned lines!
Sadly the land they once sat on was sold off years ago, which is why they were removed. If I could, I would believe me!
@CNW4145 oh ok! Thanks for the info! U have an amazing channel too! Highly underrated! I'd love to build something like this one day!
Thanks, you should build your own someday, its a lot of fun and quite rewarding!
ill try!
I hope maybe you get a steamer
The issue with that is the curves are just too sharp for them :( Need more land!
Cool. How many feet is your trackage?
The total run is about 4000 feet
Where is it located? Name of the country.....? Name of the location.....?
It is located in Illinois, USA
@@CNW4145 Okay. Thank you.
Well done. But, I noticed that your new ties are not coated with creosote. They would last longer.
They are treated with commercial wood treatment and last at least 25 years. If I could get my hands on creosote life would be great, they would live longer than I :)
You might want to take up those two power cords first ….
No power cords were harmed during the filming of this video lol
